How do I record a clickpath web check?

With our easy-to-use Dynatrace recorder (a Google Chrome browser plugin), you can gain visibility into the availability and performance of your application’s most important functionality with just a few clicks.

Use the Dynatrace recorder to record the exact sequences of clicks that you want your simulated user visits to follow when web checks are replayed. You can record button clicks, page scrolls, and even user input. The Dynatrace recorder captures each event and converts it into a script that is played back each time you run the web check.

It’s a good idea to record clickpaths that force your application to perform one or more key transactions that are critical to the success of your business and involve all the elements of your IT infrastructure.

Install the Dynatrace recorder plugin

You need to install Dynatrace recorder to begin. Following installation, the recorder will be automatically updated whenever new features become available.

  1. Select Web checks & availability in the navigation menu.
  2. Click the Add web check button.
  3. Click Install Dynatrace recorder. This button appears only if you haven’t yet installed Dynatrace recorder.
  4. When prompted to Add “Dynatrace Web Check Recorder”, click Add Extension.

Record a clickpath web check

  1. Select Web checks & availability in the navigation menu.
  2. Click the Add web check button.
  3. Click Set up clickpath web check. The Configure web check settings page appears along with a new Dynatrace Recorder browser instance that’s pre-loaded with the URL you’ve specified.
  4. In the Dynatrace Recorder browser instance, click through your application, simulating one of your application’s key use cases (logging in, searching for a product, placing an order, etc). As you walk through your application, each action is recorded for future playback. When you are finished, click the Dynatrace logo icon on your browser’s menu bar corresponding to the Dynatrace web check recorder extension and then click Finish.
  5. On the Configure web check settings page, configure your web check appropriately.

View the analytics of a clickpath

  1. Select Web checks & availability from the navigation menu.
  2. From the list of defined web checks, select the clickpath you want to examine. This will take you to the clickpath web check’s overview page. Here you’ll find details regarding, for example, the availability metrics and problems detected by the web check, as well as action-specific details.

Click the Browse button () and select View report to view a report of the monitoring results for any analysis time frame that you want to specify using the drop boxes in the top right corner.

While on the reports’ page, you can choose to receive a weekly or monthly availability report and even share the report by clicking the Browse () button and selecting the respective option.

Disable or delete a clickpath web check

  1. Select Web checks & availability in the navigation menu.
  2. Select the web check you’re interested in.
  3. Click the Browse () button and, depending on what you want to do, select either Disable web check or Delete web check.
